Each piece created at the MacKenzie-Childs studio is a unique work of functional art, hand formed using traditional techniques, hand trimmed, fired, glazed, decorated and fired again, and sometimes, again. Although handmade pots require meticulous care during the production process, MacKenzie-Childs choose to utilize these methods to ensure that each piece has its own individuality and charm, as diverse as the wild flowers that grace landscape or frost patterns on a window pane – never to be repeated.
Organic materials that are integral to the sedimentary clay body used in the creation of our ceramics guarantee that surprises abound! These materials, when fired in the kilns, can take on a life of their own creating pin holes and white spots that add to the unique character of each piece.
The clay body, glaze, stains, decals and lustres are formulated to ensure that all of pottery collections are completely food safe. While Majolica lines can be used in the dishwasher, microwave and oven, please note that items including decals or metallic lustres require hand washing and should not be used in the microwave or oven to preserve the more delicate finishes used in production of these items.
Each piece of MacKenzie-Childs pottery carries the studio mark and date of manufacture, and each artisan who contributes to a piece stamps his or her initials, adding to its collectability.
